Project logistics is treated as an engineering and programme problem, not as a freight quotation requested after procurement. Equipment dimensions, weights, lifting points, transport envelopes, packaging, hazardous classification, delivery sequence and site installation priorities are identified early enough to influence vendor selection and purchase-order terms.
Route planning can examine origin factory access, inland haulage, export terminal, port handling, vessel or airfreight options, transshipment, destination port, customs facilities, border crossings, road and bridge limits, turning radii, overhead clearances, seasonal restrictions, convoy and escort requirements and final-site access. Oversized or heavy cargo may require route surveys, bridge checks, temporary strengthening, utility lifting or road modifications before movement is feasible.
Port and terminal selection is assessed by more than geographic distance. Berth depth, crane capacity, Ro-Ro or Lo-Lo capability, storage area, congestion, customs performance, security, demurrage exposure, handling contractors, working-hour restrictions and onward-road capacity can make a longer route commercially safer than the nearest port.
Customs and import planning is tied to HS classification, origin documents, temporary or permanent import status, exemptions, duties, licences, inspection regimes and required government approvals. Responsibility for importer-of-record, broker appointment, duty payment and documentary errors should be allocated before shipment rather than resolved while cargo is held at the border.
The logistics schedule is integrated with manufacturing completion, inspection release, vessel booking, customs lead time, storage capacity, erection sequence and site readiness. Early shipment can be as disruptive as late shipment if a project has no protected storage or cannot install the equipment when it arrives.
