Heavy cargo route surveys and port selection: what must be proven before shipment

A map route is not an executable transport route. Heavy cargo may be blocked by one bridge, one urban turn, one overhead line or one weak access road. Route studies should therefore identify the controlling constraint and the engineering or permitting action required to remove it.

The survey basis should use the actual transport configuration, including trailer type, axle count, axle spacing, gross combination weight, cargo height, width and turning envelope. Bridge and pavement checks should be coordinated with local authorities and qualified specialists where required; logistics planning should not substitute informal assumptions for statutory approvals.

Port selection should be tested against the same cargo definition. Quay strength, crane capacity, tandem-lift requirements, storage, RoRo availability, customs arrangements, port working windows and route to the project all matter. The best ocean freight rate is irrelevant if the cargo cannot be discharged or moved inland safely.

Permit lead time should be built into the schedule. Oversized transport may require road authority approvals, police or private escorts, movement windows, temporary removal of street furniture or utility coordination. These activities can become the true critical path even after cargo has reached the destination country.

A route should also have a defined failure mode. If a bridge approval is refused, a road becomes unavailable or a port is congested, the team should know whether there is an alternate route, temporary strengthening option, transshipment strategy or different port. A fallback becomes mitigation only after its technical and commercial feasibility has been checked.
